ものの量や数を表す概念。具体的な数値や、数を数えた結果の総量を指す。漠然とした多くの量や頻度、または計算や計測の対象となる事柄や性質そのものを表す場合にも用いられる。

• 正確な数は不明ですが、多くの人がイベントに参加しました。 — The exact number is unknown, but many people participated in the event.
• 仕事で数をこなすことで、経験を積むことができます。 — You can gain experience by handling a large quantity of work.
• この問題は数の問題ではなく、質の改善が求められます。 — This problem is not about quantity; quality improvement is required.
• 子供たちは、一から十まで数を覚える練習をしています。 — The children are practicing learning to count from one to ten.

一つ一つ点検して、総量を確かめること。または、勘定に入れること。この意味で現代日本語において一般的に用いられる動詞は「数える」であり、「数す（か.す）」は稀な表現です。

• 子供たちは公園で集めた落ち葉を数えるのに夢中になっている。 — The children are absorbed in counting the fallen leaves they collected in the park.
• 彼は試験で間違えた箇所の数を数える作業をしている。 — He is in the process of counting the number of places he made mistakes on the test.
• 来客の正確な数を数えるように指示された。 — I was instructed to count the exact number of visitors.
