ある目標を達成しようとする「決意」（強い意思や揺るぎない覚悟）や、困難に直面しても諦めない精神的な「粘り強さ」を指す名詞です。この意味では、「purpose」（目的）や「resolve」（決心）といった単語と関連が深く、多くの場合、日本語の「決意」や「意思」で表現されます。しかし、その根底にある「確固たる意思」（firm will）や「断固たる態度」（resolute attitude）といったニュアンスは、一語で表現しきれない場合があり、文脈に応じて「揺るぎない精神力」といった表現が使われることもあります。また、物事の結論や最終的な「決定」、あるいは何かを正確に突き止める「特定」や「判断」という意味合いでも使われます。
