地位、能力、価値などが等しい人や物を指す。特定の日本語の単一語で完全に言い表すのは難しく、文脈によって対等な人、平等なもの、同等な存在といった表現が用いられる。

• She is his intellectual equal. — 彼女は彼の知的な対等な存在だ。
• All citizens are equals before the law. — すべての市民は法の下に平等である。
• He had no equal in terms of talent. — 彼は才能の点で並ぶ者がいなかった（匹敵するものがなかった）。

（数値や量などが）〜に等しい／同じになる。または、〜と同等にする／匹敵する。

• Two plus two equals four. — 2たす2は4に等しい。
• No one can equal her performance. — 誰も彼女のパフォーマンスに匹敵することはできない。
• His achievements equal those of his mentor. — 彼の功績は師匠の功績に匹敵する。

（量、価値、地位などが）等しい／同じである。同等の／平等な。

• All people are born free and equal in dignity and rights. — 全ての人は尊厳と権利において自由で平等なものとして生まれる。
